How Botox Works
How botox works is one of the most popular nonsurgical cosmetic procedures. It is used to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and facial lines, including crow’s feet, forehead lines and frown lines.
When you get Botox, your doctor injects a small amount of the toxin into your muscles. This causes your muscle cells to stop contracting. The toxin also helps relax the underlying muscle. In the long term, your muscles will slowly return to their normal state.
During the procedure, your doctor will use an EMG machine to find the best spot on your face to inject Botox. He will then use a needle coated with Teflon to deliver the toxin.
Botox works by preventing the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that allows nerves to communicate with your muscles. The resulting paralysis of the muscle prevents creases and wrinkles.

After the injection, it takes about three days for the toxin to fully take effect. However, it is important to note that the effects can last for weeks or months. If you do not see a full effect after five days, you may be a candidate for additional injections.
Botox can be used on a variety of muscle groups. Depending on the muscle you are having injected, it can take a few weeks before the effects are noticeable. Some patients are able to go as long as six months between treatments.
When you receive an injection, you will be required to tell your doctor all of your current medications. For example, you might not be able to take aspirin or certain anti-inflammatory medications. Also, you might be instructed to stop taking blood thinners a few days before the injection.
